With 5G getting entrenched in our economy and delivering 0.3-1 Gbps peak data rate to users, it is time to think about 6G which should be a substantial improvement over 5G in terms of capacity (XMIMO), frequency coverage (FR1/FR2/FR3), latency, sensing and security. For this to happen, we need a concentrated multi-national research and development effort with tight coupling between academia, national laboratories and industry of various kinds (communications, automotive, manufacturing, power), spanning antennas/RF, processors, algorithms for communications and sensing, and cyber security hardware and software, while not increasing the system cost or the energy consumption.
